Current
situation
Social media platforms like Facebook
have been getting lots of ads. Now, the brands are taking the products to
social media users with AR to enhance the product and make it more appealing
and attractive to the consumer,
James Jorner, in his article
“How Augmented Reality is creating a New Target Market on Social Media”,
published in adweek.com,
mentions how big brands are investing in AR to create ads and place them in
social media that is where the customers are. 37% of the world population has access
to the internet and use social media and 60 percent of Americans use those
sites (we are social, 2017), so big brands are trying to invade those places
with ads that almost look like they are bringing the product to the customers and
allow them to decide after interacting with the product. Advertising agencies know that the power of AR
brought to social media can help big time to get their products be successful.
How cool it is that people who buy things can have access to an AR ad where
they show them how to operate a new device, how to fix it, and with AR it would
look just like you are seeing it happening in front of your eyes, and it can
all happen without you even leave the comfort of home, making it sounds ideal
for busy people and busy lives. There are examples of ads that have been
successful when posted on social media, like the Lacoste
ad in 2014 for people to try their shoes or different products, or the Estee
Lauder LipArtist ad in Facebook. Those allowed people to try their products,
see how they looked on them and easily purchased them online afterwards
(Jorner, J, 2017).
But the uses of AR in social
media is not only coming from big brands ads. The media platforms themselves are
also incorporating technological advances to make the whole experience of
social media interactions go to the next level. One example is Facebook acquired
not so long ago the Oculus AR glasses and it is working towards developing an
app to make interactive things, like for example leaving notes on the
refrigerator that you could see with the camera of your smartphone (AR: the
next big thing in SM, 2017). Additionally, the possibility of you running into
people that you don’t recognize and feel embarrassed about it, will probably not happened again thanks to AR and
social media, because those AR glasses will help you take a picture and match
it with your social media to recognize the person (AR: the next big thing in
SM, 2017). Another popular AR app used within some social media platforms is
the camera effects, that you can see in Instagram and Facebook, and they are like
Snapchat. They can set you up in different environments and it is fun and
interactive.
The changes are happening so fast,
there is a new trend everyday and sometimes it is hard to stay up to date with
social media, especially since they are adding all the AR to it. What we don’t
know is how it will look in 2030. We can predict there will be many more
exciting changes
