Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are amazing new
technologies that have been developed, they are slowly making there way into
the physical world and into our classrooms, workplaces and communities. Let’s
take a look at how far we have come, when it comes to the advancement of these
realities and what will happen 5 years from now (2030).
Let’s take a look;
Achin
Bhowmik, the VP and General Manager of the Computing group at Intel Corporation
says that
“The next frontier of compute will empower people to build, solve, create
and play in the world where the barrier is diminished between the physical and
virtual world.” He goes on to say that “in
2017, VR experiences will move beyond the norm phases in industries like
healthcare, education and travel. Employing the latest VR technology to create
fully immersive experiences” Bhowmik then talks about the 5 forefront
technologies that will be coming up in 2017; Integrated tracking, more natural
manipulation, 6 degrees of mobility and digitized real-world content. (Bhowmik,
2016)
Sergio
Flores, Electronics Engineer for Samsung Mobile, HQ,
talks about how VR and AR technologies have made there way into the 3 biggest industries;
Education, Healthcare, and Retail, he goes on to mention how the potential revenue
of the industries will grow by 2018 ($5.2Billion+ by 2018)
“Education; Introducing a new method of travel to other times and experience
different lifestyles or moments in history.” (Flores, 2016)
“Healthcare;
Introducing better training for surgeons by allowing them to experience real
human operations virtually and allowing them to make more mistakes in order to
learn.” (Flores, 2016)
“Retail;
Introducing virtual shopping and making it possible for consumers to try out
more options while reducing retail costs for fashion companies and other shops
in general.” (Flores, 2016)
Some
of what Mr. Flores had mention, are slowly appearing the industries mentioned
above, while others are getting ready to be launched in the future.
Vishwa Ranjan,
Head of Augmented & VR at Infoys, talks about the advancement of
smartphones, at the time when his predictions were posted, the smartphones were
not as advanced as they are now.
“We’ll see
smartphones companies develop AR and VR-based features, like
image-recognition-based, location-based and sensor-based technologies and 360
cameras that will help push Ar and VR out into earlier adopter’s hands.” (Ranjan.
2016)
We can see all these advancement in the phones that were launched by Apple as
well as apps such as Snapchat.
Wren
Handman, Content Creator for Hammer & Tuck talks
about what will become of the technologies in the year 2030, taking a closer
look into education;
“Over the next 10-15 years, we will begin to
see virtual reality merging with augment and mixed realities…. As a tool in
medial, educational and enterprise industries, its already surpassing
expectations. VR and AR are being used to train surgeons, take children on
field trips to far flung locals, and provide onsite experts for technical tasks
like elevator repairs. That’s where we’ll see it continue to truly take off. By
2025, we’ll no longer have monitors. There just won’t be a need.” (Handman,
2016)
